Our summary

Poland’s transition from socialism to market economics produced sustained prosperity, while Venezuela’s centralization and oil dependence destroyed much of its wealth.

  • In 1981, Poland’s meat ration was cut to 3 kilograms per person per month; real GDP per capita fell 18% between 1980 and 1982, inflation reached 586% in 1990, and foreign debt approached $48 billion.
  • Poland’s January 1990 shock therapy freed roughly 90% of prices, slowed money printing and privatized state enterprises; GDP per capita on a PPP basis rose from about $6,730 in 1990 to nearly $56,000 in 2025.
  • Poland grew for 28 consecutive years after its transition recession, avoided recession during the global financial crisis, and reached a 2025 GDP of $1.036 trillion; the IMF expects it to overtake Switzerland by 2028.
  • Venezuela’s oil production fell from a peak of 3.45 million barrels per day in 1998 to 310,000 in September 2020, while real GDP contracted more than 75% between 2014 and 2020 and inflation reached 65,374% in 2018.
  • After Nicolás Maduro’s capture, Venezuelan oil output rose from about 820,000 barrels per day in January to 1.24 million in September, and defaulted bonds rose from around 17 cents to about 51 cents on the dollar, but inflation was still 252% last year and restoring production to 3 million barrels per day could require $180 billion.
  • The accompanying market review highlights higher airfares and shipping risks, weak Chinese luxury demand, and stronger premium-travel results from Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and Hilton Worldwide.

Takeaway: Investors should view Venezuela’s recovery as conditional on sound money, property rights, rule of law and free elections; Poland demonstrates that a credible market transition can rebuild a damaged economy, but Venezuela has not yet reached its equivalent turning point.
