Our summary
Strong third-quarter bank earnings indicate that U.S. economic growth remains solid, but slowing earnings momentum, higher inflation and rising rates make it harder for the concentrated stock-market rally to continue.
- JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup generated combined third-quarter profit of $32 billion, up 14% year over year, while revenue rose 9% to $115 billion.
- Consumer demand remains resilient: card spending increased 10% at JPMorgan, 11% at Wells Fargo and 12% at Citigroup, while overdue card balances declined at JPMorgan and Citigroup and were flat at Wells Fargo.
- The KBW Bank Index has fallen more than 10% since mid-August as Treasury yields surged and the Federal Reserve delivered its first rate hike in three years; meanwhile, third-quarter U.S. GDP growth is forecast at 3.6% and unemployment is around 4.2%.
- September CPI inflation accelerated to 3.7% year over year from 3.4% in August, while core CPI rose 2.6%, increasing concern that inflation may remain sticky.
- S&P 500 income growth is expected to slow from 28% in the fourth quarter of 2026 and 25% in the first half of 2027, while more than 40% of index stocks trade at least 20% below their 52-week highs.
Takeaway: The economy and banks remain fundamentally healthy, but investors should be cautious because concentrated AI-led gains, slowing earnings growth, higher inflation and the prospect of further Fed hikes leave the broader market vulnerable despite index-level strength.
