  • July 2026
“Significant trading was limited during the month. The holdings in Essentra and Weir Group were added to while the holding in EasyJet was reduced. After strong recent performance, the holding in ArcelorMittal was exited. A new unit was taken in Hikma Pharmaceutical.”

  • July 2026
“The UK equity market posted gains for a fourth consecutive month and was the best performing major developed market in July, showing resilience in light of a spike in volatility that saw global technology and AI stocks come under significant pressure. After a record rally in the second quarter, the semiconductor and chip equipment sector experienced a sharp repricing as investors rotated towards tech companies that have – rightly or wrongly – been placed in the ‘AI loser’ basket and defensive sectors that have been overlooked in the year to date such as consumer staples. Key activity over the month involved responding to takeover bids, reducing holdings Rotork and Segro. We also sold the position in DCC after an improved offer and exited our holding in Bunzl having staged a strong recovery in the year to date. The proceeds were partially reinvested into a new holding in Compass Group, the world’s largest contract caterer, and Shaftesbury where we view the shares as undervalued for the quality of its West End property portfolio. It remains to be seen whether weakness in the AI trade represents fundamental concerns or whether it will reassert itself in the coming weeks and months. We continue to feel that our approach of investing in a broad range of companies from different sectors and stages of their lifecycle is appropriate and will allow performance to continue to be driven by the success of our hunting for undervalued long-term cashflows. Royal London UK Equity Fund The UK equity market posted gains for a fourth consecutive month and was the best performing major developed market in July, showing resilience in light of a spike in volatility that saw global technology and AI stocks come under significant pressure. A flare up of US-Iran geopolitical tensions pushed the oil price back above $90 per barrel and lifted energy stocks. These moves proved supportive to the UK market, further underpinned by a broadly positive earnings season and an ongoing flurry of M&A activity. The fund outperformed the benchmark and peers in July. Positive contributors included Prudential where shares staged a recovery having been impacted last month by perceived risks around regulatory change in China, while Babcock performed strongly on the announcement of former Defence Secretary, John Healey, as the new UK Chancellor. Among the detractors was St James’s Place as reports suggest some loss of advisers to a competitor, while Rentokil underperformed on disappointing half-year results. Key activity involved reducing the holding in Segro after the board recommended a ‘best-and-final’ offer for the company, having previously rejected multiple takeover bids. The proceeds were reinvested into a new holding in Shaftesbury, where we view the shares as undervalued for the quality of its West End property portfolio. We also initiated holdings in the healthcare companies Hikma and Convatec.”
