Higher treasury yields may present opportunities

Our summary
Higher US Treasury yields are driven mainly by supply, demand and policy uncertainty rather than an imminent US solvency crisis, creating opportunities for active investors, especially at the front end of the curve.
- The 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.3% in August 2026, its highest level since 2007, before the Treasury announced on 19 August an expansion of its bond buyback programme; each buyback represents less than 0.1% of the targeted long-dated market.
- US federal debt reached $40trn on 18 August, while the Congressional Budget Office expects the annual fiscal deficit to remain around 6% of GDP for the foreseeable future. However, tighter US CDS, functional auctions and no evidence of foreign capital flight do not indicate an impending fiscal crisis.
- Rising yields reflect a global trend, with foreign yields increasing as much as or more than US yields, partly because of France's budget concerns, Germany's defence spending plans and Japan's monetary-policy normalisation.
- US dollar corporate issuance with maturities of at least 30 years is on track to exceed 30-year Treasury issuance for the first time since the pandemic. AI-related deals from Amazon, Google, Meta and Oracle contributed to US hyperscaler issuance of $157bn year-to-date, versus $93bn in 2025.
- The Fed is no longer expanding its balance sheet and, under Chair Kevin Warsh, has stopped publishing forward guidance, increasing uncertainty and potentially raising the term premium; clearer disinflation, a less hawkish Fed and greater balance-sheet clarity would likely help the front end more than the long end.
Takeaway: Investors should watch short- and intermediate-dated Treasuries and relative-value trades that benefit from a steeper curve, while a sustained decline in long-term yields would require an improved US fiscal outlook; higher yields could eventually attract foreign buyers after a deeper selloff.
