Accelerate Liquid Private Credit Monitor – Last Cycle’s Bill, Next Cycle’s Terms

Our summary

Q2 private-credit weakness was largely a backward-looking valuation adjustment, while the terms and earnings potential of new lending improved materially.

  • The average listed private-credit fund in Accelerate’s coverage universe recorded a -1.4% NAV decline in Q2, but a 2.4% average quarterly distribution produced a 1.0% total return; including market prices, the average return was 1.4%.
  • Most losses were concentrated in 2021-vintage loans, including software companies Medallia and Pluralsight, which had been underwritten with high leverage and extensive add-backs; the losses were mainly unrealized and mark-to-market or spread-driven.
  • New-issue pricing improved as spreads widened by approximately 50 basis points, leverage declined, documentation tightened through more covenants, and reduced non-traded BDC redemptions shifted pricing power from borrowers to lenders.
  • The rate outlook also became more supportive: expectations moved from two Federal Reserve cuts at the start of 2026 toward one or two hikes, which could raise distributions on predominantly floating-rate private-credit assets by 25 to 50 basis points.
  • Non-accruals remained at 1.9% of fair value, PIK income declined to 8.1% from 8.5%, and average BDCs traded at a -22.6% discount to NAV while their loans were marked at 95.9% of cost; Blue Owl’s pricing implied 40% portfolio defaults with recoveries of 50 cents on the dollar.

Takeaway: Investors should distinguish the realized earnings power of newly originated loans from backward-looking NAV marks; the combination of higher rates, wider spreads, stronger lender protections and large BDC discounts could support returns, although software refinancing risks and idiosyncratic credit losses remain important reservations.
